The art of Bonbon and the Deep Below - LD48

First, I'd like to congratulate everyone on their submissions for LD48! So much creativity. This was my first game jam and it turned out to be such an amazing experience thanks to @colinbellino and @pronomicalartist .

I had never heard of Ludum Dare before I stumbled on Adam Younis devlog for the past LD compo and it prompted me to stop dreaming about making games, and to actually take some action and get involved!

Now for some art, all of which has been done on Procreate for iPad and Clip Studio:

CONCEPTS AND DESIGN

The initial sketches were pretty rough, but they were enough to get the ball rolling, and quickly our hero got retrofitted with a gauntlet to brute force his way through layers of dirt.

I thought it would be easier to design and animate strong reading poses instead of something more generic as him digging with his own paws. Plus injecting some silliness is always nice.

I took inspiration from the works of Alexandre Diboine and Stéphane Boutin, whose work on Flinthook I've always admired.

ANIMATION

The run animation was my first biggest hurdle. I hadn’t animated a run cycle in a long while, let alone cleaned up and coloured animation. After the initial rough pass of 8 drawings, it became clear to me that I had to cut down drawings to the most essential ones, so that it still came across as a run. The end result was a little chunky but better than nothing!

That’s all for now, thanks for reading this far, and stay tuned for a followup with backgrounds and props!
